Smiling, she replied, "You're welcome, Alfie." To Andy, she said, "Please, call me DJ. I hope I get to be the Healer you see the next time your boys come in. Aaand..." She pulled a lollipop from her coat pocket. "This is for Alfie." She handed it to Andy. "But your mommy will give it to you when she says so." |

Pushing Katie along in her pushchair, Emma made her way toward the Padiactric examination room as directed by the friendly receptionist. Katie was due for a routine check-up and Emma was glad it wasn't for one of her routine vaccinations. Katie really wasn't fond of jabs at all but who could blame her? No one liked having a needle jaed in their arm. Katie was such a healthy, happy baby. In the seven months she'd been alive, she hadn't yet got sick and Emma determined to keep it that way. Sitting in the waiting room, Emma and Katie waited to be called through. Edited by Emma_D'Abugine, Dec 29 2008, 07:04 PM.

Chris headed to the pediatrician exam room. Not his normal specialty, really, but he had delivered the baby, and they were a bit short in pediatrics that day. So he found himself going to check up on little Katie D'Abugine. "Hey Emma," he greeted her, walking into the room, Katie's file in his hands. "And hi there, Katie. Merlin, have you gotten bigger since the last time I saw you," he said, smiling down at her. He put down the file on the counter and began flipping through it. "So, is Katie in for anything specific today or just a check-up? I see she's had her vaccinations already." |

"Chris. Hi, how are you?" Emma asked, greeting the Healer as she follwed him into the examination room, pushing Katie's pushchair inside. She sat and lifted Katie onto her lap. "She has grown. I can't believe it's already been seven months since I popped her out. Hey, Katie? You such a big girl now." Emma waited patiently as Chris flipped through the file and shook her head. "Nope, just a check-up. No vaccinations for a while and thank Merlin. She's not a fan of the needle. So. What's first?" |

"Not many babies do like the needles," Chris remarked, continuing to flip through the file. One thing stood out as rather unusual to him, a test not normally done on children: a paternity test. He was slightly confused, but it was not his job to pry into his patients' personal lives. "Well, I see Katie's had quite a few Healer's appointments already," he remarked. "You must have been relieved about the paternity test results," he said. He hadn't exactly intended to bring it up, but it was just conversation. It wasn't like the tests had a bad result: they showed Kevin D'Abugine affirmatively as the father. "I'm going to weigh her first. So, how has Katie been eating lately? Nothing unusual?" |

"Hmm...? Oh yes she has had a few appointments..." Emma replied, somewhat distractedly as Emma tried putting the tassles of Emma scarf in her mouth. "No darling. You don't want that in your tummy." She shook her head. "She's eating well. Nothing unusual really but I think she's probably about to start teething soon so she's trying to put anything and everything in her mouth. Guess it won't be long before she tries eating stuff she's not suppoed to." Emma made another attempt at removing the tassle from her daughter's mouth as Katie shoved it back in but what Chris had said moments ago abotu the paternity test registered and her head snapped up, 'eyes narrowed shock that he'd even say that. "Relieved? Relieved that he's the father? That that son of a..." Emma glanced down at Katie who had looked up her mum's raisd tone. "..That that man is Katie's father? No I bloody well wasn't. Do you think I wanted to tell my husband that he wasn't his child? Edited by Emma_D'Abugine, Dec 29 2008, 09:50 PM.

Chris busied himself making sure the scale was calibrated and the like, but he turned back to Emma, surprised at her vehement reaction about the paternity test. He was actually...really really confused. "Wait... Kevin D'Abugine isn't your husband?" he asked, trying to make sense of it. "They did send you the results, didn't they?" |

"Whoa! Whooooa there. What are you saying?" Emma had absolutely no idea what Chris was on about. Before she had been sure he was telling her he thought she'd be relieved Matthew was Katie's father and now...? "Of course Kevin's my husband. Who else did you think, I thought he was? I got the resultsut they said Matthew Berenson, was the father... I might have spent a night with him about nine months before Katie was born." She added this bit quietly. "So... what? I thought..." Interesting. Kevin was her husband, so why was she so upset that he was the father? Well, he got the answer to that pretty quickly. She apparently received false information. He shook his head. "No, that's not true at all," he said. "Here, take a look for yourself." He pulled out the information of the paternity tests results and brought them over to Emma to show her. "We have very conclusive results that Kevin D'Abugine is, indeed, the father," he said. "I really don't know why any other results would have been sent to you." The idea that the hospital could have made such a monumental mistake - one that severely affected people's lives - was appalling. "I am... so sorry that this mistake was made." |

Emma stared blankly at the resuts Chris pushed in front of her. Kevin? Kevin was Katie's father? With shaking hands, Emma hugged her daughter close, the information still digesting. It took her a moment to realise that she was actually crying slighly. Whether from relief or anger that someone had sent them the wrong information, whether by accident or not. She nodded slowly at Chris's apology her gaze still on the results, knowing it wasn't his mistake. Her mind however was on something he'd said. 'I really don't know why any other results would have been sent to you.' The wheels in her head were slowly turning. The only other results from the truth, would state that Matthew was Katie's father. No one knew that there had been the possibility of Matthew being her daddy but Emma, Kevin and Matthew, and Kevin definitely wouldn't have changed the results. So that left... And then there was that package from Matthew to Katie. The last time Emma had seen Matthew, she was only just going into labour. She hadn't contacted him since so how could heven have known her name? Unless... Emma's eyes darkened, her hold of her daughter almost protective. "It wasn't a mistake," she ground out, lifting Katie back into her pushchair. "Someone changed the results deliberately, to try and stir things up, just like they always do and I know who it was." She turned back to Chris apologetically. "Any chance we could reschedule this appointment? And please... could you Owl a copy of the real results to me? Kevin'll want to see them." Jaw set, Emma exited the room with Katie. She had a score to settle but first she really needed to talk to someone. Edited by Emma_D'Abugine, Dec 31 2008, 12:57 AM.

Chris nodded. "Rescheduling isn't a problem," he said. "And I'll send those other results right away." Emma headed out, and Chris took that moment to take the original results out of the file. He duplicated a copy, sealed it himself and sent it out with one of the Mungo's owls. |
